What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a scientifically established psychological intervention which focuses on how a person’s negative thinking patterns and behaviours can have a powerful impact on their emotions and feelings. CBT focuses on the ‘hear and now’ issues, rather than focusing on the past. CBT empowers people to identify how unhelpful thoughts and behaviours may trigger and maintain negative emotions and psychological disorder. CBT is the treatment of choice recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE GUIDELINES), for the treatment of childhood psychological disorders, including depression, anxiety, attention and hyperactivity disorder and eating disorders.

Do Parents Have to Attend the Groups?

We recommend that parents attend the group with their child or adolescent to get the maximum benefit from the group. If an adolescent is 14 years or older, we would be able to discuss further with parents the young person attending alone.

Will attending one group be enough?

The psycho-educational Groups are designed as an introduction to CBT, and can be valuable to children and families to identify whether they would like to access further CBT privately or within the NHS. The groups are designed as an excellent introduction for children and parents to learn triggers and maintaining factors of anxiety, anger and low self-esteem, and to learn practical strategies to overcome anxiety, anger and low self-esteem. The groups are not a substitute for ongoing individual therapy. Individual CBT with children and families can be arranged through ABCPsychology. Individual CBT can also be accessed with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Teams in the NHS.

Can I attend more than one group?

It is possible to attend more than one group. Each group offers innovative and practical strategies to address anger, anxiety or low-self-esteem.

I am not sure which group to attend?

Please phone or email ABC Psychology to speak with a Chartered Clinical Psychologist for further information.

Will attending affect my NHS treatment?

Attending ABC Psychology will not stop you accessing psychological therapy in the NHS.
